SAVANNAH, GEORGIA –
Savannah is full of pralines,
gelato, and oh yeah, kick-ass BBQ too.
Sandfly
BBQ (www.sandflybbq.blogspot.com)
for the first dinner in Savannah. Sandfly cooks low & slow, over
hickory and pecan wood for a great smoky flavor. Perhaps the best
ribs ever, super meaty, no fat, clean off the bone, and a great rub.
Chicken was great too, moist & tender. Pulled pork was
delicious. Brisket was also very good, but just a touch dry.
Three different sauces, all good. $23 for
two, and
there were leftovers. Three out of three southerners with me
agreed: Absolutely top recommendation. |

Wiley's Championship B•B•Q (www.wileyschampionshipbbq.com) Neck and neck with Sandfly. Wiley's also uses hickory and pecan woods for a great flavor. Pulled pork (perfect consistency) and brisket (literally fall-apart) were slightly better, but Sandfly's ribs and chicken had a bigger edge. Great peach cobbler and sweet potato casserole, and a vinegar (not mayo)-based slaw. Wiley's has a great ("Better than Sex!") BBQ sauce too. Ultimately, Sandfly wins when you factor in price: $27 for two at Wiley's. The staff were super-nice, including helping us pack up a ton of food to bring north to the Yankee relatives. |

Angels BBQ (www.angels-bbq.com) is to Sandfly and Wiley's as Panda Express is to the best restaurant in Chinatown. I.e., it won't kill you, but it sure ain't good eatin'. Positive Yelp reviews are simply wrong. No ribs on the menu. Chopped chicken, pork, and brisket all looked and tasted exactly the same. The picture speaks for itself. It's downtown and convenient, but that's about all that can be said for it. Avoid. |
