– KANSAS CITY,
MO and KS –
Kansas City restaurants were
chosen based on various programs on the Travel Channel
and the Food Network, supplemented by some additional Internet research.
Oklahoma Joe's Bar-B-Que (www.OklahomaJoesBBQ.com
and
Yelp) is literally in a gas station.
And it's the best BBQ in Kansas City. The ribs were very tender
and moist; great consistency and great smoke. Brisket was also
tender and most, but could have used more smoke. Lots of smoke on
the thin-sliced turkey; very tender. The consistency of the pulled
pork was perfect – I like it pulled, not mushy – but it
could have also used more a little more smoke and rub .
Great fries. |

Arthur Bryant's
Barbeque (www.ArthurBryantsBBQ.com
and
Yelp) was my all-time favorite BBQ for
many years, until I went to Franklin's in Austin and Oklahoma Joe's in
KC. Prices
are cheaper than other places since the ambience is, well, not exactly fine dining.
Cafeteria-style pickup. Fall-off-the-bone pork ribs, terrific sauce, and super-tender pork
with great consistency and flavor. Very tender brisket and turkey,
although perhaps a bit light on the smoke. Only $21 for
two, and
there were leftovers. Arthur Bryant's is even included in the book 1000 Places to See Before You Die! Watch "Food Heavens: Barbecue Wars" video clip in Windows Media Player (12 MB) or Quicktime (18 MB). |

Gates Bar-B-Q (www.GatesBBQ.com and Yelp) was interesting... cafeteria-style pickup, but nicer decor and seating. Excellent customer service (and a greeter), but slightly disappointing, relatively speaking, only because it wasn't quite as fabulous as the other places I went. Still better than any BBQ in California, of course. $20 for two, no leftovers. |

Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue (www.JackStackBBQ.com and Yelp) for dinner (takeout, to eat on the plane) was a great way to wrap up my first BBQ trip. The restaurant is more upscale than others – and the prices reflect it – but the food was great. The chicken was a little dry, but the pork ribs and brisket were great, and Jack Stack also has crown prime beef ribs, which have a lot of meat – but no fat – on them. $31 for two, with leftovers. |

Woodyard Bar-B-Que (www.WoodyardBBQ.com and Yelp) started as an actual woodyard, supplying other restaurants in KC, until the owners decided to open their own restaurant. Despite appearances on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" and "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations," I thought the food was just adequate. The ribs were a little fatty and quite chewy; the bones did not come out clean. Pulled pork had a good taste, but were mushy. The brisket was a little chewy and had good smoke; the turkey did not have enough smoke. $11 buys a 4-meat combo dish enough for two for lunch. |
